Today I needed my signature witnessed in connection with my son's application for university accommodation. I called in at my local solicitor (Mellons, Charlton KIngs) thinking this should be straightforward. I've lived locally for 22 years. The response to my request was: "we wouldl only undertake this for our clients"; " we don't know who you are"; "you might find another solicitor to do this for a large charge". I would place the response somewhers between officious and rude. I very easily found another local solictor who was happy to witness my signature (for 15) and took time to explain their Wills service, which we will be needig soon (and which I was going to ask Mellon's about). I will take my business elsewhere in future (but I don't think Mellons want more business!).
